Our 13 year- review of pediatric patients in intensive care

Objectives: In our study we aimed to present the demographic data and mortality rates of the pediatric patients treated in Cerrahpafla Medical Faculty Emergency Intensive Care Unit between 1997 and 2010.

Methods: Our study is a clinical retrospective study where the files of 261 patients aged ranges between 6 months and 18 years; and were treated over 24 hours in ICU were reviewd. The diagnosis, APACHE II scores, the presence of mechanical ventilation and mortality rates of the patients were evaluated.

Results: 2925 patients were treated in our ICU in the given time and of those 261 (8.92%) were pediatric patients, aged between 6 months to 18 years. The diagnoses of the pediatric patients included intoxications (10.3%), burns (14.6%), trauma (21.1%) and acute respiratory failure (27.2%). Of the 261 patients, 114 (43.7%) received mechanical ventilation treatment over 72 hours and 114, 29 of them (25.4%) died. Pediatric patients mortality is 20.7%.

Conclusion: As a conclusion 261 pediatric patients were treated in 13 years in the Emergency Intensive Care Unit of our faculty. Primary source of these patients was. Most of those 261 patients were applied primarily to the emergency room. Patients with chronic disease were very few. The mortality of our unit is in acceptable levels
